Available here is a delicate and fine example of the beautifully detailed 18th century artistry and craftsmanship in the genre of mourning jewelry. The brooch features black hand painted decoration inside the glazed panel that drapes onto the scene in the fork of a weeping willow, and over what appears to be an urn. The urn itself is made from a pearl, and is accented by gold thread, smaller seed pearls, black paint, and notably, the initial “D” appears to be hand painted on the urn’s pedestal. The locket is framed by gold and white enamel, indicating that whomever the person was that this piece commemorates was likely unmarried. On the back, a lock of hair can be seen contained underneath a glass panel. There is also a small pendant loop on the back, so this piece can be put on a chain and worn as a necklace if desired.

Condition: There is slight observable damage and loss to the enamel on the lower left section of the brooch, as well as minor scratches and nicks on the metal and glass commensurate with age. As of now, all the seed pearls are secure in their place and have not moved, but given that they were likely initially glued in place with a substance like animal skin glue, I cannot guarantee they will remain that way forever (the gold rope thread does seem to help them stay in place, though). The pin on the brooch works and unhinges, but is slightly sticky. The glass panel on the front requires delicate handling, and may pop out of place if handled too roughly. However, it pops back into place just as easily, but it’s important to note that this piece requires careful handling. Metal untested by me, but listed simply as “gold” by the auction house I sourced it from.

Antique boxes depicted are not included and are for display purposes only.
