Meet The Marie: She's flirty, enjoys anything with a little sparkle, always knows how to add some whimsy to life (even as an adult), and she's unapologetically feminine with a love for frills. The Marie is the most charming antique Georgian necklace, c.1780s, with wonderfully preserved paste stones set in a beautiful bow design. I just love finding bow jewelry from the Georgian era, because there’s something about it that feels so playful and whimsical. I think there is some disconnect we tend to have toward people from the past, and might picture as being stuffy, and have a hard time relating to them. So, when I see pieces and designs like this, it reminds me that they felt the same joy that we do now, and could be just as playful and fun as we are now.

The necklace is made up of a paste pear-cut stone meant to mimic the appearance of amethyst, with that stone set into a copper colored closed-back pie crust setting. The bow is set with sparkling paste stones that mimic diamonds, dazzling brilliantly hundreds of years later. It includes the chain, which is 24 inches in length. I am not entirely sure if the chain is original to the pendant, but it was sold to me at auction as one piece, with no indication from the auctioneer that the chain was of a later make. However, the bolt ring clasp appears to be a more modern replacement. If you’d like to add a little whimsy to your life, and have something in your jewelry box that would make Marie Antoinette give you a nod of approval (Antoinette was known to have a large collection of paste jewelry herself), then this lovely piece is for you.

Please note that this is an antique piece, and is well over 100 years old. As such, it is a pre-owned piece and is not in mint condition. Antique pieces almost always have hints of patina, surface wear, small nicks, and other signs commensurate with its age. Please keep this in mind before deciding if a piece is right for you. I have done my best to document all the details or any major flaws of the piece both in writing and photographs to help you make your decision.
